Yi Shun Lai Mirror Works, Window Works: Inclusivity in Writing and Reading Non-Fiction June 7 to July 2, 2021 Tuition: $550 Class Size: 15 Session: summer Level: 4 week asynchronous workshop

ASYNCHRONOUS

In this four-week course, writers will learn the value of reading inclusively. We’ll then put what we’ve learned by reading inclusive works to work by trying our hand at writing characters and narratives from cultures different from ours–sensitively, respectfully, and effectively.

Using exercises drawn from Yi Shun’s life as a diversity, equity, and inclusion educator, this course will allow participants to examine and understand their internal reading habits and perceptions. Attendees will leave with an understanding of what it means to write inclusively–and why it’s important.

Week 1: The Writer’s Guide to Reading Inclusively
Week 2: Writing “The Other”: How to do it; why it matters
Week 3: Research: Broadening your world
Week 4: Putting it all together

All texts to be provided in class
