2024 Summer Workshops
This workshop is part of the POETRY FESTIVAL
Paper, sticks, a printed image, a bit of wind — that’s enough to get this class off the ground. Paper kites are in all cultures and have a way of returning us to childhood as quick as a madeleine. This class won’t expect you to get barefoot and isn’t for children. Instead it will channel that childhood wonder as we use simple woodblock printing techniques and a bit of glue to create kites that soar with beauty and color. First step is to design the shape of the kite out of wood sticks and glue. Next, figure out the paper shapes needed to “skin” the kite. Lastly, design, carve and print relief blocks. We will use oil-based block printing techniques, and your choice of wood or linoleum to print on light washi papers. Once printed, the papers will be shaped and attached to the kite’s wood structure, and with some string and a bit of luck, you can fly it out the door. Or, you can take the idea of “kite” and make a soaring work of art that moves our hearts and blows open our imagination.
Biography
An artist, painter and printmaker, Daniel Heyman is driven by his social concerns and has striven through his work to give dignity and voice to victims of violence. He is a recipient of Guggenheim and Pew Fellowships, and numerous research grants has had residencies at Dartmouth College; MacDowell; Yaddo, the Awagami Paper Factory and Nagasawa Art Park in Japan and in Herzliyah, Israel. Heyman’s work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Library of Congress, Philadelphia Museum of Art; Baltimore Museum of Art; St Louis Museum of Art; Yale University Art Gallery. Heyman lives and works in Rhode Island. Recent solo exhibitions include exhibitions at Spring Break Art Show in New York (2020), CR Ettinger Studio and Gallery (2020), the Amon Carter Museum of Art in Fort Worth, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond and Cade Tompkins Projects in Providence. Heyman teaches at RISD, Princeton and the PAFA.
