2024 Summer Workshops

Adam Davies Photographing the Landscape: Explorations in Outer Cape Cod August 14 to August 19, 2016 Tuition: $650 Workshop: 1-4PM Discipline: Photography OPEN TO ALL On-site Housing Available

“Happy are those who see beautiful things in unassuming places where others see nothing. Everything is beautiful, what matters is to know how to interpret it. “ -Camille Pissarro, 1893.

In this class, you will explore and photograph the diverse landscape of Outer Cape Cod. As we take trips to some of the wilder and overlooked areas of the Cape, we will consider different methods of capturing natural sites with the camera. Our projects will test the unique capabilities of the camera as a representational and artistic tool. Through a variety of different activities — pinhole photography, experimenting with depth of field and long exposures, composition and assemblage — we will discuss how the camera can be operated and manipulated to create innovative images of the landscape. Destinations may include Province Lands dunes, Beech Forest, Hatches Harbor, Wood End and a carpool trip to Truro or Wellfleet.

This class emphasizes experimentation and process. It is a supportive environment to try new techniques and is open to all levels, including participants with little photographic experience. However, a basic understanding of your camera is needed, including how to set the camera to manual controls for aperture and shutter speed.

Students should bring a digital camera. A laptop and tripod would also be very useful. Most classes will involve time spent outdoors. Make sure to have comfortable clothes and shoes for walking through different environments, including sands, marshes, or woods.
