This workshop is part of our Poetry Festival.

In this generative-based, poetry-making workshop, we’ll explore the power of poem-making to metabolize aggression out of our bodies through the transmutation of experience, insight, and exchange, to reclaim and restore our humanity and more in both the public imagination and our own physical bodies. Through our engagement with each other and collective and individual processes of making, we will work toward a resolution of the base metal of violent aggression into something golden, something which offers light, recognition, direction, sustenance.

Biography

Samiya Bashir is the author of Field Theories, Gospel, and Where the Apple Falls. Field Theories won the Oregon Book Award for poetry in 2018 and Gospel, which, along with Where the Apple Falls was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. Bashir is editor of Best Black Women’s Erotica II, and co-editor of Role Call: A Generational Anthology of Social & Political Black Literature & Art. Bashir holds a BA from UC Berkeley, where she was Poet Laureate, and an MFA from the University of Michigan. Bashir lives in Portland, Oregon where she teaches at Reed College.
