I’m thinking poems are made out of very clear easy things: words, repetition, art, nature, love and sex and loss, music, political climate, limitation, time, death, rhythm. God? Ideas about god or spirituality. So we’re going to use all those things – in discussion and through direct application onto the surface of our poem. Life to some great extent is a mess and we are going to use that messiness as the source of our uncanny little poems. I’m always glad to look at the work of Judy Grahn and John Wieners, Simone White, John Clare, anonymous illiterate Mayan women, Rumi, Fanny Howe, John Ashbery, Leslie Scalapino, and Mario Santiago Papasquiaro, Roberto Bolano’s sidekick. We will have a good time.
