2024 Summer Workshops

Joseph Cassara Fiction Workshop July 7 to July 12, 2019 Tuition: $650 Workshop: 1-4pm Discipline: Fiction OPEN TO ALL On-site Housing Available

This workshop is designed for students who are at work on a collection of short stories or novel. We will discuss two student pieces per class (either a short story or self-contained novel chapter), in addition to published stories by writers like Annie Proulx, James Baldwin, and Mavis Gallant. Our focus will be on annotating and providing critical feedback for the works-in-progress, while also discussing how stories and chapters function in a book-length project.

Please submit 10-20 pages of a short story or novel excerpt (double-spaced, 12pt font) to dwalsh@fawc.org by June 21. If you are submitting a novel excerpt, please also include a full plot synopsis that is no longer than one printed page. And, please bring ten copies to the first class meeting.

Biography

 Joseph Cassara is the author of the critically acclaimed novel The House of Impossible Beauties (Ecco), which was selected by Barnes & Noble as a Discover Great New Writers selection for Spring 2018. He holds degrees from Columbia University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and was a writing fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center. He currently lives in Fresno, where he is an Assistant Professor of English at the California State University.
