How to Write a Poem How to Write a Poem August 13 to August 18, 2017 Tuition: $600 Workshop: 9am-12pm Discipline: Poetry OPEN TO ALL On-site Housing Available

This is a no level workshop. If you took this workshop before you can take it again. It’s both the same and different. This year is very different. A poem is like a relationship that helps you weather the tensions of your existence. It’s a sail, it catches the wind. My favorite thing is a poem and like any gig I think you can enter or re enter it from many different points and often inexperienced poets are often more adept in picking up new things and employing them than more experienced practitioners. I’m a little interested in how poetry is like prose and like political speeches and stand up comedy. I’m interested in choral poetry. Can we write for more than one voice? What do we sound like? So we’re interested this time in how to stretch the medium but meanwhile build it good, accept difference and look at some contemporary masters: Juliana Spahr, Brian Teare, John Wieners, Judy Grahn, Mira Gonsalez, Fred Moten and Allen Ginsberg. How did they live in the world with their work? How do we? This will help.
