2024 Summer Workshops
The painted figure has evolved through the changing modes of painting over the last 150 years. From the realism of Manet to the cubistic fracturing of Picasso and distortions of Schiele, the black lines of Beckmann to the immediacy of Alice Neel and the cartoonation of Guston, to the fragmentation of Cecily Brown, the geometric workings of Amy Sillman and distorted humor of Nicole Eisenman. In a workshop environment we will explore these various interpretations of figuration. Regardless of how we ourselves presently paint the figure, a visual investigation of the work and process of these other artists can only enrich and push our own vision and process in representing the human body. Critiquing is all done on an individual basis and therefore each workshop member can be working on/in whatever format they desire. Discussions, images, and demos will proceed throughout the week and an exchange of ideas/processes between class members is encouraged. Models (male and female) will be present at all classes. All mediums are allowed including drawing. All students are welcome regardless of their level of experience. Emphasis during the week is more on Experimentation and Process than Product – not to say you won’t make some great pieces!
Biography
Jim Peters graduated United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, in 1967, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge (MS, Nuclear Engineering), and Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, (MFA, Painting). He has exhibited regularly in NYC and Provincetown, MA (Berta Walker Gallery). Awards include Fellowships at Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown (1982-1984), Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Fellowship (1999), and Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowships/Grants (1985,1988,2002, 2008). He teaches drawing at the Rhode Island School Of Design.
