2024 Summer Workshops

Joanne Dugan The Image and the Word: A Collaborative Workshop for Photographers and Writers July 24 to July 29, 2016 Tuition: $650 Workshop: 9AM-Noon Discipline: Photography OPEN TO ALL On-site Housing Available

The often-repeated quote says that a “picture is worth a thousand words.” Yet the addition of written text to photographic sequences yields surprising results that tell a visual story in a new way. There are layers and nuances of communication that can’t be experienced through an image or text alone. Or as Theodor Geisel once wrote, “Words and pictures are yin and yang. Married, they produce a progeny more interesting than either parent.”

This class will include assignments and lively group discussions, designed to inspire you to tell your own visual stories in a new and personal way. We will also experiment with numerous writing forms and discuss ways to present the text/image projects you create.

We will also look at the works of artists who have successfully combined photographs and text, including Duane Michals, Jim Goldberg, Lee Friedlander and others. In addition, we will explore photography books (both contemporary and one-of-a-kind rare vintage works) that successfully use image/word juxtapositions.

Students who have taken a version of this class can expect to enhance and refine their previous process as well as to experience new class material.

All digital camera formats are welcome, including android/iphones. No previous writing or photographic experience is necessary. Students receive individualized feedback in reviews, so experience at all levels is welcomed. Please bring a laptop for editing if available and a flash drive of at least 2GB to transfer images for printing.
