2024 Summer Workshops

Holly Hughes The Legacy Project: Mining Modern Masters in Your Studio August 14 to August 19, 2016 Tuition: $650 Workshop: 1-4PM Discipline: Painting INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED On-site Housing Available

We all receive extraordinary legacies from other artists – both past and current. But how do we use this gift in the studio? If you seek new questions, new directions, and new open doors for your work – join a workshop focusing students on developing a practical list of challenges to their current practices and habits. Group and one-on-one critique will revitalize and reorient participants in a manner extending far beyond the FAWC week.

Within a menu-based approach, we will create a selection of projects from a list of launching points including fauvism, cubism, surrealism, plastic automatism, abstract expressionism, color field painting, pop, post painterly pop, conceptual and selected postmodern strategies. Feed your painting practice by developing a greater understanding and use of approaches and strategies central to painting language and begin to customize them to your own needs and expressive intentions. Build deeper context for your practice. A fun, intense and fully immersive studio week.

Students should bring painting materials of their choosing to set up in a fast and functional workshop manner. Students should also bring a minimum of twenty printed images of artists of interest to you and a selection of your own work to present to the class.
