2024 Summer Workshops

Amy Arbus The Personal Narrative June 25 to June 30, 2017 Tuition: $650 Workshop: 9am-12pm Discipline: Photography OPEN TO ALL On-site Housing Available

We will explore the photo essay as a way to reveal the nature of a person (or people) in context, over time. A compelling picture story sets the scene, introduces the characters, evokes a mood, and shows the conflict and all of its bittersweet consequences. Participants are encouraged to think about story ideas that relate to your own personal experience before class. Through slide presentations and critiques we will discuss techniques for lifestyle, photojournalism, fashion and traditional portraiture. Key topics will be: approaching people, collaborating with them and encouraging them to feel at ease. Most importantly, we will cover techniques for editing, sequencing and presentation.

In preparation for class, please read Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking by David Bayles and Ted Orland. Familiarize yourself with “The Country Doctor,” by W. Eugene Smith from Life Magazine.
