Kate Clark Figurative Sculpture: Exploring Nontraditional Materials to Create a Visual Story June 28 to July 3, 2020 Tuition: $650 Workshop: 9am-12pm Discipline: Sculpture On-site Housing Available

This workshop is part of MEMOIR & CREATIVE NONFICTION WEEK

Transforming the surface of an object can powerfully change that object’s meaning, allowing the external to suggest an internal state of being. For this workshop you will start by sculpting, using non-hardening clay, a very basic form of a life-size head (skull, eyes, nose mouth, neck—no sculpting experience necessary). The transformation and storytelling begins as you cover the form of the head with materials that are personal ie: natural materials, candy wrappers, vegetable skins, hardware, studio supplies. The materials can be anything at all as long as they can be ripped, bent, cut or torn, manipulated in some way to place on the surface of the bust, creating a narrative. We will look at examples of artists using non-traditional materials, and you will be encouraged to collect materials that can be combined in unexpected ways to suggest history, humor, emotion, memory, etc. We will sculpt in class using a model, and I will take you out mid-week to collect additional materials. This class is meant to be experimental, a step towards a larger exploration of expressive materials.
